IMR LECTURE, SENATE HOUSE (Room 261)
Inspiration in the Desert
A Creative Journey
Born and educated in the West, yet living four decades in the East, the songs of the ingathered exiles of Israel - their melodic curves, timbres, rhythms and ornamentation - became an integral part of my musical vernacular. Guided by the inspiration of the Bible, the timelessness of the desert, ethnic traditions and folklore, I sought to integrate Jewish identity within a context of Western artistic aspiration.
This lecture-demonstration documents the tribulations and triumphs in the genesis of my contemporary biblical compositions via field recordings, CDs, Video and DVD – in styles combining traditional elements with the methods of modern and avant-garde serious music, and works ranging from educational pieces to mature artistic compositions.
